If you’re looking for a fun family destination year round Hofsas House Hotel in Carmel is the perfect kid-friendly place to stay.
When my family and I were invited to stay the weekend at Hofsas House Hotel we were beyond excited. If you haven’t been to Carmel before, it is a bucket list worthy destination. Whether you spend the day or the weekend, Carmel-by-the-Sea will reward you with some of the world’s finest scenery, historic sites, art galleries, restaurants, and boutique shops.
We started our family adventure early in the morning because we wanted to take in as much as we could along the drive up to Carmel. With having young children, it was necessary for us to stop along the way so that we could grab a bite to eat and stretch our legs. Although we arrived at Hofsas House Hotel in the evening, I was fascinated by the pink exterior as we pulled up. Being that pink is my favorite color, we were already off to a great start and I was excited for what was in store for us.
The Hofsas House offers the perfect atmosphere for a family getaway, as soon as we entered our room we were greeted with wine and cheese (To enhance your stay, add this special Wine and Cheese package to your stay for only $30.) It was such a welcoming gift after a long road trip from home and Mommy and Daddy were ready to relax by the fireplace and enjoy this very generous gift.
We stayed at the spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom (bathtub/shower with vanity area) family suite that contains a king bed in one room and two queens in the second room. Not only were the kids ecstatic for their own room, it was also a parents vacation dream come true to stay at an affordable two-bedroom suite where kids and parents have their own rooms. Some family suites include a fireplace or dining area. The kitchen facilities are either a full kitchen (oven, stove, refrigerator) or wet-bar (microwave and refrigerator), all with coffee makers.
This suite was perfect for my family since it can easily accommodate six people and still have room for a rollaway bed ($20 per night extra) if needed. The Bavarian-themed hotel has ocean views, free continental breakfast, parking, Dutch doors that open up to capture the beauty and freshness of Carmel and best of all, it’s walking distance to everything in Carmel-by-the-Sea and minutes away from Monterey and it’s neighboring communities of Pebble Beach, Big Sur & Pacific Grove.
The next morning we had the opportunity to meet with Owner, Carrie Theis. She not only made us feel right at home but the pride she has for this family-run boutique inn was apparent in the way she spoke of Hofsas House Hotel and the quaint city of Carmel.
While the kids and I enjoyed the free continental breakfast, she spent the time to highlight some family fun activities for us to do. Carmel’s best attribute may be its seaside location close to all of the area’s star attractions which are all within a 15-20 minute drive. On foot, by car, or both, there’s no lack of things to do.
Carrie suggested we grab some lunch at the local 5th Avenue deli for some delicious sandwiches and cheese which we enjoyed on one of the picnic stops on the 17-Mile Drive compliments of Hofsas House Hotel. She had a amazing day planned for us and we couldn’t wait to enjoy it all. After the 17-Mile Drive we headed to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.
What is the 17-Mile Drive?
As you enter the gates that lead you to 17-Mile Drive’s red-dotted line, you’ll be greeted by dramatic coastal cliffs, snow-white beaches, mystical forests and iconic golf courses. Whether you drive it, bike it, or walk it, this romantic stretch of coastline will make you want to live here! (I know my family and I do!) Discover one of the most scenic drives in the world as you meet the inspiring Lone Cypress, ponder the giant trees at Crocker Grove, digest the untouched beauty at Fanshell Beach and behold the power of the Restless Sea at Point Joe. These amazing views will leave you breathless. We became one with nature, as we enjoyed the iconic views by spreading out a blanket on the small beach at Spanish Bay and enjoyed our picnic. My kiddos had never experienced anything quite like this scenic drive before, so they were in awe the entire drive.
Admission to 17-Mile Drive is $10.25 per vehicle, cash only. The 17-Mile Drive gates are open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Motorcycles are prohibited.
About Monterey Bay Aquarium
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has always been one of the most awe-inspiring aquariums I have ever been to. It is also one of the largest public aquariums in North America. I’ve visited the aquarium a few times in the past but nothing beats the excitement of your children when they see tiny jellyfishes or the large killer whale above the foyer as you walk in. There are so many interactive activities along with exhibits you won’t want to miss. One of my kids favorite exhibits were all the hands-on activities that they were able to participate in.
If you haven’t already been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, it is one you’ll want to check off your bucket list, especially when traveling with kids. Not only is it educational, the aquarium also offers some of the most amazing views in Monterey.

Where to eat?
Carrie Theis, owner of Hofsas House, graciously gifted us with a wonderful dinner at a Abalonetti’s Bar & Grill on Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Known for their delicious calamari, Abalonetti’s was the perfect restaurant for me and my family. They had a wide selection of entrees on their menu that satisfied everyone’s palate, even the little ones.
Reasonably priced, great customer service, you can’t go wrong with choosing Abalonetti’s for a nice, quiet, dinner and evening out with your family.
And don’t forget to save room for dessert! Our server came out with a tray full of goodies to choose from… and it was so hard to narrow our selection to one, we decided to go with two desserts… sounds like a win-win to me.
