Segerstrom presents “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder”

This past week the hubby and I got treated to the hilariousness of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder at Segerstrom Center.  It has been described as “daring, naughty and ingeniously absurd,” by Variety. They definitely got it right. It is not a musical for kids or the faint of heart. It will have you laughing from beginning to end.

“Coming direct from New York GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by eliminating the eight pesky relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way. All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance and be done in time for tea.”

Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder has all that you can look for in a musical comedy. It takes place in the early 1900’s, so the language and song styles are more opera like. I was amazed at the singing which added to the already great story line. The musical numbers flowed well and kept with the comical ambiance. One song in particular, ” It’s Better with a Man,” had everyone laughing hysterically. It added to the scene when Monty(the main character) is meeting his closeted gay cousin. The acting and song words all played to the naughtiness of the musical.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder already has a Tony Award for Best Musical which just certifies how good it is. This is definitely not one for the kiddos but great for a date night or girls night. The raunchiness is hilarious and definitely adds to the comical relieve of the murder scenes. I believe this is why it is so good and different. They have been able to blend murder, comedy and naughtiness into one amazing musical. I have never seen anything like Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder and truly had a great time up to the last scene.
